The world changed on the 11th of September 2001. Before that terrorism normally paid off. In countries like South Africa and Ireland terrorising the populace was regarded as a legitimate way of furthering your political cause. The 'end justified the means'. Ultimately the ANC became the government of South Africa albeit not through terrorism alone. In Northern Ireland the IRA would never have had their prominent role if it wasn't for their ruthless terrorist campaign of the last 30 years. 9/11 might have changed that, although I doubt it. This page also covers other issues of international importance such as the current crisis in the Middle East and the single European currency and the libertarian lobby in the UK's stand towards it. |
