African Affairs

The end of Apartheid provides a unique opportunity to reverse the post-colonial disasters Africa's leaders visited upon it during the cold war period. South Africa, as the only industrialised country in sub Saharan Africa, could provide the dynamo for an 'African' Renaissance as president Thabo Mbeki called it.

But for that to materialise Africa would have to stop apportionating blame for all its woes on everything from slavery to the weather and start dealing with its problems - most of it created by power mad tinpot despots and their apologists. The reality of the new international Zeit Geist is that Africa would have to mend its destructive ways. The leadership of the continent and in particular South Africa, should show the world that it will not tolerate the power crazy dictators who are prepared to do whatever it takes to cling to power.

Robert Mugabe's destruction of Zimbabwe is an example of everything that is wrong in Africa. But in stead of taking a leading role in the international outcry over the atrocities in its neighbouring state, the South African government has done nothing other than act as apologists and to engage in a strategy of 'quiet diplomacy'. A strategy that was doomed from the start.

The following articles strive to illustrate this reality as well as show the complete lack of leadership from the South African Government in this whole sad state of affairs.
